Tuesday, May 11th, 2010When people start screaming to become project managers they often don’t know what they can expect to do in the future. When I started the only thing I could come up with is tracking projects and making people do their job, and in fact, it’s more or less true.
Besides these components of the job, there are many more things to take care of. For people who really want to know what they are doing or can expect, I suggest to start reading about Prince2 or the IPMA courses.
Project management is the discipline of planning, organizing, and managing resources to bring about the successful completion of specific project goals and objectives. It is sometimes conflated with program management, however technically a program is actually a higher level construct: a group of related and somehow interdependent projects.
IPMA and Prince2 can take the same coverage and make you think different about managing projects. When taking a closer look to these two we see they take the same approach, but still on there own style. It’s recommendable to read about both of these and take the best out of them as you please.
For most people project management is something learned from experience, not from books. Part true and part not. You can learn much from experience, but the wrong things learned will be applied multiple times in the wrong places and in the wrong time frames. Creating and deliverables are one thing, but being efficient and succeed a project with less then needed resources takes a good project manager. Everybody can finish a project when all the resources are available, but it takes a good one to notice when this situation occurs, or not of course.
When to correct your project, When to cancel, When to proceed. Go / No go situations.
All situations have different approaches, and we all know it, but we don’t know how to handle correct with these situations.
I started with project management 7 years ago, and until recently I thought I was experienced and could handle all situations. Of course I could, but after taking project management classes and devoting my skills on project management, I realised project management is more then just driving people, making a project a success. It is also about making people perform, be a coach, signalling when needed and even more important, documentation. Key players, core business needs and translation from functional to technical when needed.
I hope this helps for people who needed a bit of information about project management. I also hope the project managers who never have read a book abour Prince2 or IPMA, that they will take a week of there time and start reading a bit about these approaches and identify what they do the right way. And what they do the wrong way.
